Some may say we are in a renaissance of video game adaptations as we’ve been treated to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, another Sonic the Hedgehog film, and a TV series based on The Last of Us, and will soon be getting adaptations of God of War, Fallout, Ghost of Tsushima, and so many more. The best part? A lot of these look so much better than video game adaptations we’ve gotten in the past, and we’re here to gather all the latest details on the biggest ones in the works.
How many will actually make it through development and see the light of day remains to be seen, and only a fraction of these have actual release dates. But we’re watching these projects, and we’re tracking them!
For the purposes of this list, we classify a “video game movie” as an actual film adaptation of an existing video game, so something like Wreck-It Ralph (which is just a movie about video games) wouldn’t qualify. They don’t have to be faithful adaptations – they just have to be based on a real game.
Click on through the slideshow below for a glimpse, or read on to find out about the biggest projects with definite details. And if you see something incorrect, missing, or in need of an update, let us know in the comments!

The following are the most definite projects that are currently in the works.
Fallout
Release Date: April 12, 2024 on Prime Video
Prime Video’s Fallout series is nearly here, and CCXP 2023 treated fans to the first trailer for the much-anticipated show. We also learned a ton about the project from an interview we had with executive producer and director Jonathan Nolan, executive producer and co-showunner Graham Wagner, and series stars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Walton Goggins.
As for what the series is about, Prime Video has us covered:
“Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind—and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them,” the official description continues.”
Borderlands
Release Date: August 9, 2024
The Borderlands movie was announced back in 2016, to be produced by Avi and Ari Arad and written by Aaron Berg. While news was slow for several years after that, Lionsgate surprised fans in February 2020 by announcing Hostel’s Eli Roth will direct the movie, with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin penning a new screenplay draft. Cate Blanchett has been confirmed to star as Lilith, and Kevin Hart will also star as Roland. The cast also includes Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Kreig, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack Black as Claptrap. Production has officially ended for the Borderlands movie, and CinemaCon 2022 gave us our first look at the adaptation.
We still have yet to see a trailer for the film, but it is set to arrive in theaters on August 9, 2024.
Arcane: Season 2
Release Date: November 2024 on Netflix
The popular animated series based on League of Legends will return, as will Hailee Steinfeld’s Vi, Ella Purnell’s Jinx, and Katie Leung’s Caitlyn Kiramman. We were treated to the first trailer in January 2024 and it seems to confirm a major Season 1 fan theory.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Release Date: December 20, 2024
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will officially speed into theaters on December 20, 2024, and will follow the second film that became the highest-grossing video game movie of all time in the US. We don’t know much about this third entry, but the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 confirms that a fan-favorite will be joining the cast when it arrives in theaters.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
Release Date: 2024 on Netflix
Netflix is developing an animated series called Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft that is set within the universe of the reboot games – specifically, after the events of 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
However, Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell will voice Lara rather than the game’s voice actress Camilla Luddington. Additionally, The Witcher: Blood Origin’s Tasha Huo will be writing and executive producing the show.
Untitled Knuckles Series
Release Date: 2024 on Paramount+
Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog will get his own series on Paramount+, with Idris Elba reprising his voice role from Sonic 2. Per Paramount+, the live-action show will follow Kunckles on a “journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.”
Joining Elba will be Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Stockard Channing, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Rory McCann, Edi Patterson, Julian Barratt, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi), Ellie Taylor, Adam Pally, and Tika Sumpter.
Minecraft: The Movie
Release Date: April 4, 2025
Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) has been attached to direct the Minecraft movie, which will tell the story of a teenage girl trying to save the Overworld from an Ender Dragon. The film was scheduled to be released in March 2022, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was delayed and now has a theatrical release date of April 4, 2025.
In April 2022, Aquaman star Jason Momoa was in talks to star in the movie, and we’ve since learned that Jack Black will most likely play Steve and will be reportedly joined by Jennifer Coolidge, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
The Last of Us: Season 2
Release Date: 2025 on Max
After a stellar first season, HBO’s The Last of Us will be returning in 2025 with new episodes that are based off the second game in the Naughty Dog and PlayStation franchise. We haven’t been given any details on the new season’s story yet, but we did learn who will be playing some of our favorite characters from the game, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Manzino as Jesse, and Isabella Merced as Dina.
In our review of HBO’s The Last of Us, we said it “is a breathtaking adaptation of one of the most impactful stories told in video games and brilliantly brings Joel and Ellie’s journey to a whole new audience. Taking the essence of what made the original tale so enduring, it builds out the world of the game while also switching up some aspects to almost entirely stunning effect.”
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

The first film was a hit at the box office and on streaming, so you can bet that there will be a Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 soon enough!
