‘Whiplash’: A Life in Art

The obsessed artist trope is one of my all-time favorites, especially in film. Seeing a character delve into the darkest parts of their psyche is shockingly cathartic for an anxious perfectionist like myself. However, tragedy stamps most of these films with a familiarity that often dulls the ending into a predictable lesson that unwavering devotion to one’s craft is futile.

Alternatively, “Whiplash” is a morally ambiguous commentary on the stress and suffering required for success. It asks the viewer to come to their own conclusions about Andrew Neiman, a first-year at a prestigious music conservatory in New York. He loves drumming and his participation in the program reflects his talent.

The movie opens with Andrew playing on his own. The revered jazz musician, Terence Fletcher, suddenly appears in the room to watch Andrew play. Andrew feels the pressure to impress the legendary figure. Immediately, the tension rises. Fletcher is introduced as a role-model figure, whose personality is limited to his artistic abilities and awards. The scene ends in confusion — Fletcher leaves Andrew to wonder if his musical talent is good enough.

Allow me a moment to say, the visual reflection of self-consciousness in the dark, green-ish room is reminiscent

The Literary Film & TV You Need to Stream in April ‹ Literary Hub

Every month, all the major streaming services add a host of newly acquired (or just plain new) shows, movies, and documentaries into their ever-rotating libraries. So what’s a dedicated reader to watch? Well, whatever you want, of course, but the name of this website is Literary Hub, so we sort of have an angle. To that end, here’s a selection of the best (and most enjoyable bad) literary films and TV coming to streaming services this month. Have fun.

Literary bona fides: based on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels

Usually, once there’s a perfect adaptation of a novel, there’s really no reason to retread. But you can never have enough Tom Ripley. Netflix’s new series stars Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and was written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian. Will the monochrome pay off? Will Andrew Scott continue to take over my brain? Only time will tell.

The Zone of Interest (streaming premiere)
Max, April 5

Literary bona fides: based on The Zone of Interest by Martin Amis (2014)

Biden Fund-Raiser and Trump Visit to New York Preview Clashes to Come

The epicenter of the presidential campaign shifted to New York on Thursday, as the incumbent president and three of his predecessors descended on the area for dueling events that illustrated the kinds of political clashes that could come to define the general election.

For Democrats, it was a high-profile, celebrity-studded fund-raiser for President Biden in Manhattan. On Long Island, former President Donald J. Trump attended a wake for a New York City officer who was killed during a traffic stop on Monday. Together, the day’s events struck an unusual contrast in a general election campaign that has so far been largely defined by appearances in courtrooms and at small, invitation-only events.

Mr Biden, along with Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, appeared before 5,000 donors at a Radio City Music Hall event that campaign aides said raised $25 million. The eye-popping number set a record for a single political event, according to the aides, and offered a star-studded show of Democratic unity as the president heads into a difficult re-election campaign.

The three Democratic presidents spent much of their time in New York City wrapped in the glitz of their celebrity supporters. Tieless and in matching white shirts, they sat for

Princess Kate apologizes for manipulated royal photo after news agencies pull image

Catherine, Princess of Wales on Monday apologized and admitted to editing an official portrait of her released by the palace, after AFP and other agencies withdrew the image.

Issued on:

3 min

Kate, 42, has not been seen in public since attending a Christmas Day church service, and underwent abdominal surgery in January, fueling speculation about her health, particularly online.

Her Kensington Palace office on Sunday sought to dispel rumors by distributing an official photograph said to have been taken by her husband Prince William of her with their three children.

But questions quickly emerged from the Mother’s Day portrait of a smiling Kate, casually dressed and seated in a garden chair, surrounded by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Discrepancies included several inconsistencies, such as Charlotte’s left hand being misaligned with the sleeve of her cardigan and a missing part of her sleeve.

The eight-year-old princess’s hair ended abruptly on her shoulder while Kate’s zip was lighter than elsewhere.

April design news: the history of hi-fi, the future of energy and a pizza watch | Life and style

Qhis month’s design news is pretty nostalgic. Jonny Trunk’s wonderful history of hi-fi catalogs reminds us of the world before downloads and the launch of boutique Granny Takes a Trip brings back 60s psychedelia. And, as the new exhibition at Vitra Museum shows, looking to the past for answers to modern problems may well be the best solution.
